I'm surprised at the amount of mixed reviews 'Journey to the Shore' has. It's true that it differs from his acclaimed and popular thrillers, but Kiyoshi Kurosawa still manages to create the same kind of mysteriousness and atmosphere of his previous films.
Journey to the Shore (岸辺の旅, Kishibe no Tabi) is a 2015 Japanese romantic drama film directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, starring Tadanobu Asano and Eri Fukatsu. It is adapted from Kazumi Yumoto's novel Kishibe no Tabi. It screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where Kurosawa won the prize for Best Director.
Journey to the Shore is a touching love story with a twist that is a nice change of pace for director Kiyoshi Kurosawa and it shows that he still has his directorial skills intact.
Journey to the Shore is an incredibly complex film, we see how human life is affected by experience and communication with other human lives and how these themes become of increasing importance to two characters that live in a story defying audience expectation. Perhaps it's Kurosawa's most experimental film yet; perhaps it's also his most emotional.
In short "Journey to the Shore" can be said to be adapted from a novel, and one can assume that it is a failure because of a clumsy, poorly planned adaptation that may be trying to deliver many elements of the book without integrating it, convincing them or keep a consistent tone.
